I spoke with Marlboro coach Dave Santos a short while ago about his team’s you-have-to-see-to-believe win over East Brunswick, which ended with a 4-3 Mustangs win in penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie. I didn’t see the game, so I’m not sure I believe it, which means I might be telling you about a game I don’t actually believe happened. That’s how crazy this Marlboro season has been, and it’s getting crazier. Pleas read on.

Marlboro and East Brunswick scored about 1:30 apart near the end of the first half, the only scores of the game. With 15 minutes left in regulation, goalie Greg Belanger went up and hauled in a cross, but went down hard on his hip. The extent of the hip injury is not known, but he also showed symptoms of a slight concussion, which led the Marlboro training staff to recommend that he come out of the game. Chris Holdorf came in and with a little under 10 minutes to go, just minutes after he entered the game, the senior backup almost handed East Brunswick the game.

Marlboro played the ball back to Holdorf, but the goalie whiffed on his attempt to boot the ball upfield. The ball rolled toward the goal but it hit the post. Holdorf frantically scrambled to get it, and covered it up right on the goal line before it went over. Santos said the referee blew the whistle, at which point he thought the ball was going to be ruled a goal, however the referee called an invalid touch on a playback, because a goalkeeper can not touch the ball with his hands when the defense plays it back to him. The result of the call is an indirect kick on the six-yard line for East Brunswick, which is the closest thing to a gimme, outside a pk.

So picture this: All 11 Marlboro players line up in front of the net for the indirect kick. EB player touched the ball, while another streaks in for the game-winner…and shoots it wide! At this point, Marlboro has to not only realize it will win this game, but it may never lose again until next year.

So Holdorf is off the hook. But his day is far from over because the two teams go to pks. Ameer Abedrabbo has a chance to put the game away after Marlboro takes a 4-3 lead with kicks by Weisberger, Freedman, Amato and Curtis. Abedrabbo misses, giving EB a chance to tie. With Marlboro’s season again riding on a very high percentage shot for EB, this time Holdorf does something about it – he stuffs the shot. Missing Belanger, perhaps the best pk goalie in the Conference, his backup comes in and, after nearly handing the game over to EB, takes after the man ahead of him on the depth chart and stuffs the pk.

An unbelievable game, with a great story of redemption mixed in for Mr. Holdorf. Marlboro keeps inventing ways to win and now they get a date with defending Group IV champ Rancocas Valley. And they get as many as four chances to invent another way to win.

I need to take a walk. Be back later.

Well Matt I was at the game and the info you got is not a lie. It really happened with Holdorf. We all couldn’t believe when that ball went under his foot. He had redemption and the Mustangs now move on to the semi finals another crazy game.

Manley, for starters i gotta say i absolutely love coming home after our games and reading your blogs. Also i wanted to mention that yeah his name isn’t eric its christian or chris as somebody already mentioned so hopefully you can fix that. Another thing is in regards to the blog you wrote following our win over cba in the sct finals. I was that one fan you referred to and bashed for bashing krachie. i have been friends with krachie since the first grade and he knew we’d give him a hard time but its all fun and games because he knows we got mad love for him so i just don’t want you to think that any of us as fans were being disrespectful especially not myself. And by the way, the reason we had such a crazy game has got to be since you finally picked us haha you may have put a curse on us.. but for some reason i feel like its our year no matter what happens, but we shall see.
