Thursday Thoughts

How about that Class A North, huh? Middletown South gets CBA on its home turf and nearly pulls off the upset of the year, which would have also been the biggest upset I would have seen in my few years covering soccer around here. As it is, a great showing for Middletown South, which has scored six goals in its last two games (1-0-1) after scoring three in the first 10. So if you like percentages, compared to their first 10 games, the Eagles scored 200 percent more goals in 20 percent of the time. Frank Nicoletta, who probably had the best chance to get Midd. South on the board in a tough 1-0 loss to Middletown North on Saturday but misses, finished both goals for the Eagles Thursday.

Scott Beaty scored in the 70th to send the game to overtime and save CBA, but this is more of a win for South than it is a loss for CBA in my book. This division is relatively even this year, with last place Middletown North seriously challenging first-place Marlboro twice this year and Colts Neck going from 6-1 losers to 2-1 winners against Freehold Township. CBA playing without arguably its best player and the division being as even as its been, this result shouldn’t come as much of a surprise as it normally would.

What you, the reader, should be thinking: This is the guy who said Midd. South would beat Marlboro two weeks ago to try to be different and now he’s trying to make like he saw this coming. I don’t buy it. He probably took today off because he didn’t think anything big would happen.

All true.

Also, in case you didn’t think their win over Rumson yesterday was enough, St. Rose officially clinched a share of B Central today with a 6-2 win over Asbury. Dylan Marx had three goals to get to 11 on the season as he tries to catch teammate Chris Hueth (12).

I’ll be back Friday to cover two games. Lacey-TRN is the nightcap and I haven’t decided which one to go to before that. Ocean-Freehold? Shore-TRE? Lakewood-Central? Take another day off and watch Yankees-Twins instead? Probably not the last one, but only because I have a DVR. See you tomorrow.
